P0401 Check Engine Code
EGR Flow Insufficient Detected
When the computer asks for exhaust gas recirculation, not enough exhaust is getting back into the intake — that shortfall is P0401 (EGR flow insufficient). Carbon often clogs the EGR valve or passages; a failed valve or a sensor that under-reports flow can set the same light. Some drivers feel ping on acceleration or a rough idle if the valve sticks open; plenty of others only notice the check engine light until emissions testing comes due.

- Light ping or knock on acceleration under load

- High mileage or short-trip driving history (carbon buildup)
Can I keep driving with a P0401 code?
Usually yes for normal commuting — schedule diagnosis before emissions testing.
Heavy ping under load — ease off the throttle; prolonged ping can harm combustion chambers.
Severe idle stumble — get scanned; a stuck EGR can affect drivability.

- Carbon-clogged EGR valve or intake passages

- Restricted EGR tube or cooler (if equipped)
- DPFE or pressure sensor fault reporting low flow incorrectly
